About CAPDHHE

CAPDHHE is an association of equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and human rights practitioners that centre on the dignity of the individual and work to foster respect and inclusion on Canada’s post-secondary campuses (physical and virtual). We do this proactively through education, networking and sharing, as well as responding to prevent harassment and discrimination on campuses.

EDI practitioners occupy a space that is filled with challenges and resource constraints. Their roles are often called up to provide expert advice to all members of their campus community, such as senior administrators, professors, students, visitors, and contractors. Sometimes these members can be in conflict with each other; the association supports EDI practitioners by providing a sounding board for approaches to current questions, the sharing of best practices and importantly, a place of common understanding. We are also leaders in human rights and equity and offer programming and the development of new approaches and initiatives that result in creating more human rights centered campuses.

While CAPDHHE was founded in 2000, its roots go back to 1984, and the National Conference on Sexual Harassment Association (NCOSHA). This conference evolved into the Canadian Association Against Sexual Harassment in Higher Education (CAASHHE), and then into the organization as it exists today when it was recognized that members were often addressing other forms of discrimination and harassment in addition to sexual harassment. At that time, it was clear that the mandate of the association needed to be expanded.
